As we are in the first week of October, we are in the exact same time period as the 331 BCE battle of Gaugamela, which was fought on the 1st of October.
The battle ranks as one of the 10 most important battles in all of world history having brought the armies of Alexander the Great of Macedonia and Darius III of Persia together. At the end of the day, Darius was driven off the field (again), and for all intents and purposes, the Persian Empire was dead.
Interestingly, the battle happened a mere approximately 45 miles northwest of Erbil in the open plain between Maqloub Mountain and the mountain range running south of Duhok. Today this location remains one of the highlights of tours conducted by The Other Iraq Tours (Kurdistan Iraq Tours).
